The big day is tomorrow!  Most likely you’ve got your turkey in the fridge or freezer and all your ingredients ready.  You’ve got an idea for how the day will look and hopefully took some tips from our 4th of July post to make your Thanksgiving Day as low-waste as possible.

Have you thought about what you’ll do AFTER Thanksgiving?  I’m not talking about Black Friday shopping.  I’m talking about all the leftovers.  Most Americans throw away 20-30% of their Thanksgiving food because they get tired of leftovers or they go bad.

  • Compost any scraps from fixing your meal
  • Use the water from cooking veggies to water plants
  • Make broth from the turkey carcass- bone broths are super nourishing and can be frozen to use in recipes later on (check out a great recipe here)
  • Make pot-pies with leftover potatoes, meat and veggies
  • Add a bit of sweet potato puree to macaroni and cheese- it will add some veggies and make the flavor much more rich
  • Freeze meals into single servings to dig into in January when you’re not tired of Thanksgiving food anymore!
  • Make turkey salad, turkey tacos or turkey soup (bonus- you can use your broth for the soup too!)
  • Send leftovers home with your guests in jars that you’ve saved from other uses
  • Make Shepherd’s Pie

What other ideas do you have to help keep Thanksgiving leftovers out of the trash?
