Welcome to the second post in our National Breastfeeding Month series!  
Last week we looked at common breastfeeding myths, this week we’re going to look at some of the benefits for Mom and Baby.  

Mothers know that breast milk is more nutritious and beneficial for their babies but often aren’t sure exactly what the benefits are (or aware that Mom gets benefits by choosing to breastfeed too!).

Benefits for Mom include:

  • Reduced risk of postpartum hemorrhage
  • Lowers risk for breast, uterine and ovarian cancer later on in life
  • Burns calories- helping to lose baby weight quicker
  • Decreased risk for osteoporosis later in life
  • Saves money
  • Aids bonding
  • Delays ovulation
  • Easy to transport
  • Decreases risk for postpartum depression and anxiety
  • Easier to put baby to sleep at night
  • Breastmilk poo doesn’t smell!!!

  • Perfectly formulated nutritional needs
  • Reduced risk of asthma
  • Protects from illness
  • Breastfed babies have a more balanced weight and are less likely to be overweight
  • Higher IQ
  • Lower rates of constipation and diarrhea
  • Decreases frequency of ear infections, allergies, and eczema
  • Increases bonding
  • Lowers risk of SIDS

 

Did you know breastfeeding had so many benefits for the Mother as well?  I certainly didn’t when I began my breastfeeding journey!
