Zero WasteCamping Tips (3)
Sometimes I really wish I could slow down time- especially during the warm, lazy summer days.  What have you been doing this summer?

We just got back from a long camping trip with my in-laws.  It was a great  to get away from the city for a while.  Camping is one of my favorite activities.  Every summer we debate living out of our tent for a while- we haven’t tried it yet… maybe next year!

We hiked to a beautiful (and COLD) waterfall

Last week we talked about cleaning up a local park.  This week I want to look at camping.

Camping often ends up extremely wasteful. With a few simple steps you can camp Zero Waste!

Zero Waste Camping Tips

*Bring a compostable bag and put compost in it to bring home. drop off recycling somewhere local.  Sometimes you can check for local farms in the area and bring your compost to them (I’ve gotten some free produce in exchange!)

* Drop off recycling somewhere local if there isn’t on-site recycling at your camp ground

* Make sure to clean up your fire pit and avoid burning anything but wood (which creates a significant amount of pollution).  Be mindful of how and where you wash your dishes as well- it’s a good idea to boil some water and sanitize dishes that way.

*Instead of purchasing pre-made camping meals, make food at home and bring it with you in your own reusable containers.  There are many resources online for easy camping food that don’t require refrigeration.  They usually use freeze dried produce and dried grains/beans.  Use up the food in your cooler before the ice melts away and then use your pre-made meals.

* Looking for a healthy marshmallow alternative?  I LOVE these from Wellness Mama   You’ll want to make them a few days before you camp and let them dry out a bit of you won’t be able to roast them.  They are incredible and make yummy S’mores (I use homemade almond flour graham crackers)!

Have fun and help keep nature clean!  I would love to hear about your summer camping experiences in the comments below!
